After being a spectator for 15 years in the sport of drag racing my dream was fulfilled on Valentine's Day 2006 when my husband bought me my first drag car.
She is a TD Cortina powered by a 302 Windsor, which I named Boopy (after Betty Boop!). My dream was shortly destroyed when we blew up her diff back in April 2006.
While we were getting a 9" built we decided to take her engine out and give it a freshen up, only to find that she had a bog stock 302 with no real performance parts in her as advertised.
With help from many wonderful people we have met in such a short time we have given her a complete make over. She will be getting launched in September 2006.
I now have a new respect for those who build a purpose-built car - I have gone from only knowing the front from the back of a car to knowing every bolt and part. And I know now, there is definitely more to drag racing than driving in a straight line.
As mentioned before, we have met some fantastic people who have provided accommodation in and around Melbourne, picked up or organised parts for us, and provided a wealth of information and advice. Our kids have made a lot of friends at the race track and love going racing so they can catch up with all their new friends and watch some racing.
My husband has been incredible - putting so much into getting me back on the track to keep my dream alive.
It's great to be able to do something for me (as Mum is always the one missing out), but most importantly knowing that the kids are watching every pass and hearing those words "Mum, I'm so proud of you" is priceless.
